Dall sheep inhabit the mountainsides of the Knik River Valley. The rams tend to stay up above the flock in small numbers while the ewes and lambs gather in large groups. Fireweed thrives along the river banks and hillsides. It is said once the blooms reach the top of the stalk, winter is near and summer has reached its end. Brown and Black Bears make their home in the valley, feeding on vegetation in the spring and indulging in large quantities of berries and salmon in the fall. Their survival depends upon their ability to pack on enough fat to last through the bitterly cold winters. Moose are abundant throughout southcentral Alaska. More people are injured by moose encounters than bears. Be especially cautious of moose cows with calves as they are prone to charging in defense of their young. Dragonflies are plentiful and appreciated for their appetite for mosquitos, Alaska's unofficial state bird. Salmon Fry spend several months in clear pools feeding on mosquito larvae in preparation for their epic journey out to sea and to maturity before returning to their natal stream to spawn. Tundra Cotton and a myriad of exotic arctic flower species are abundant throughout the Knik River valley.
